WOLVERHAMPTON CROWN COURT - 20th February 2012

R v Vilela

Broadway House Chambers' leading silk, Tahir Khan QC, is currently appearing in Wolverhampton Crown Court in defence of a 46-year-old woman accused of murdering her husband at their Walsall home in 2011.

The Defendant discovered that her violent and abusive husband had had an affair with another woman, fathering a child with her. In response to his infidelity she doused his duvet in petrol and set fire to it whilst he was sleeping in the bed; he was roasted to death. The Prosecution allege that this was an act of revenge, but the Defendant defends on the grounds of "slow-burn" provocation, which if successful would reduce the charge to manslaughter.

The case continues and a full report will appear here on Chambers' live News Service, once the verdict is given.
